Asthma and Allergies

The March 2004 Home magazine (from the UK) has an article called "Create a Healthier Home". It says double-glazed windows, central heat and carpet are the root of allergies. It talks about lowering humidity by: opening windows after taking a bath, shower or while cooking and adding a de-humidifier.

Use Fewer Chemicals: use 1/2 cup white vinegar to rinse to brighten whites, use 2 T vinegar in warm water to clean windows, mirrors and glass. Buff with clean dry cloth.

Paint: looks for paints that are solvent free or VOC free. Ecos organic paints are solvent free and contain no VOCs. www.ecopaints.com

Dustmites are disgusting little creatures and their droppings can double the weight of a pillow in 6 months. They rise into the air when we sit on a bed or sofa and can remain there for 30 minutes. To reduce the number of dustmites: wash bedding once a week in 60 degree C water, use dustmite-proof covers on mattresses and pillows, vacuum carpets regularly OR replace with linoleum or wood flooring, use blinds (preferably vertical) rather than curtains, air your home and bedding every day. Open windows when cleaning.

Air: invest in air-purifying machine (not ozone), paint with purifying paint, vacuum regularly and use HEPA filter vacuums.

(No vinyl wallpaper as mold may grow behind it.)
